We have seen the mobile network technology growing from the 1st to the 5th generation. However, some of us may have missed out on their steps of evolution. Let’s have a look at how the technology reached where it is today.
First Generation (1G)
During this period, the first generation of mobile networking was based on radiowaves which enabled only calling facilities. Do you remember the time when we could only make calls on cell phones? It did not provide messaging services either.
It was first introduced in Japan in 1979 and later spread across the US in the following year. To improve the calling experience and connectivity, cell towers were constructed in several cities. But this did not help retain the network strength or ensure security. Often, the network would go weak all of a sudden. The network was frequently interrupted by radio signals and as they were not encrypted, hacking it was a child’s play for many skilled hackers. Secret information and valuable data which were communicated were leaked.
Second Generation (2G)
As we can clearly see, 1G was far from perfect. In 1991, 1G was widely replaced with 2G which provided way better services than the former. 2G was based on digital signals due to which they provided better security and capacity. With 2G, people could send SMS and MMS (for namesake as the process was very slow and often did not get delivered). But with the introduction of GPRS, SMS and MMS could be sent even when the sender or the receiver was traveling.
Third Generation (3G)
A lot changed with the arrival of 3G. We could do more than just call and message. The change was so prominent that mobile phones became the center of people’s lives and with it came mobile phone addiction. 3G provides better connectivity and soon became the hub of social activities. It was faster and ensured that more data can be transmitted- a huge amount that made even video calling possible.
Fourth Generation (4G)
If 3G was revolutionary, 4G definitely changed the world. Being almost 5 times faster than 3G, businesses started more than just emailing and video calling using 4G. Documents and data could be easily stored and retrieved without any interruption. Instant downloads, messaging, and connectivity were the key features of 4G.
